I just finished reading Pulse of Perseverance and I have so many emotions right now — the greatest of which is admiration. I am so proud to call Pierre, Max, and Joe or should I say, Drs. Johnson, Madhere and Simien, my classmates, fellow Xavierites, and brothers in medicine.

Everyone has a story — and it’s not always a pretty one. Yet, these 3 black male doctors are so honest and candid about the trials, struggles, and obstacles that at times deterred, but ultimately strengthened them to become the doctors they are today. It’s amazing how you can sit beside someone, go to school with them for four years, and still have no idea of their life story, who they are, where they came from, and what drives them to pursue and achieve their goals. Their story should encourage all of us to get to know each other a little better.

What I especially loved about each of their stories is neither of the three shies away from giving God and the community who poured into them, the glory and credit for their successes. It truly takes a village…
